Key Problems Facing the World Essay Example for Free
Key Problems Facing the World Essay Almost half the worlds population now live in urban areas and, as cities grow even larger, conditions for civil cities are likely to get worse. This continuously swelling population, if not properly addressed, will lead to several very serious problems. Three of the most critical key problems are increasing pollution, global warming, and worsening social conditions. Firstly, pollution is abundant in cities due to dangerous gases being released into the atmosphere and toxic effluents being dumped daily into streams and rivers. These cause significant pollution of air and water. This sorry scenario is the result of billions of selfish decisions made by millions of uncaring individuals. Next, cutting down of trees and forests to make way for agriculture and human habitation causes destructive floods to occur, animals to be deprived of their habitat and become extinct, and temperatures to rise. Ironically, the participation and support of governments and corporations in the name of development is like adding salt to the wound. Thirdly, having to leave homes for education and/or work in cities is tearing apart family relationships. Gone are the traditional family values like filial piety and closeness of blood relations. Such great increases in the urban population numbers lead to related problems like insufficient homes, lack of schools and poor health and sewerage facilities. Finally, immigration to cities can be likened to fire. If used well, it can spread warmness, Otherwise, destruction of lives and property would result. There must be proactive programmes so that the population, like fire, can be harnessed positively.
Mixed Numbers And Improper Fractions English Language Essay
Mixed Numbers And Improper Fractions English Language Essay A Fraction has two parts that tell us what it denotes. The first part is the top number or the numerator. The numerator is the number of pieces you have. The second part of a fraction is the bottom number called the denominator (THINK: Downominator). The denominator is the number of pieces the whole thing is divided into. Example: 3/4 means: We have 3 pieces of something. The whole thing is divided into 4 pieces. Each piece is a quarter (1/4) of the whole thing. There are three types of fraction: [Picture may need to be redone. Taken from http://www.mathsisfun.com/improper-fractions.html] We define the three types of fractions like this: Proper Fractions [glossary term; a fraction where the top number is smaller than the bottom number. http://www.bing.com/Dictionary/search?q=define+proper+fractionFORM=DTPDIA] A proper fraction is a fraction with the numerator smaller than the denominator. In other words, the numerator is less than the denominator. Examples: 1/3, 3/4, 2/7 1/2 etc. This is the type of fraction we typically think of when we are sharing or splitting something up. Improper Fractions [glossary term; a fraction where the top number is bigger than the top number. http://www.bing.com/Dictionary/search?q=define+improper+fractionFORM=DTPDIA] An improper fraction is a fraction that has a numerator larger than or equal to its denominator. In other words, the numerator is bigger than or the same size as the denominator. We can remember an improper fraction by thinking its top-heavy. In the examples below, notice how the top number is bigger than the bottom number? That makes it an Improper Fraction. Examples: 4/3, 11/4, 3/2, 7/4, 16/15, 99/5 The term IMPROPER suggests that you shouldnt use it or that its incorrect in some way, but there is nothing wrong about Improper Fractions. As you move on to higher levels of mathematics, you will find improper fractions are very friendly to use. We know that when the numerator is less than the denominator it is called a proper fraction. When the numerator is greater than the denominator it is called an improper fraction. What do we call the fraction when the numerator is equal to the denominator as in the example 4/4 ? [Picture may need to be redone. Taken from http://www.mathsisfun.com/improper-fractions.html] In this instance where the numerator is the same as the denominator, the number of pieces you have are the same as the number of pieces the whole is divided into. We define this as 1, just as a pizza is a WHOLE pizza when it has all of its slices. Whenever you see the same number in the numerator as the denominator, remember that fraction equals 1. Examples: 4/4 = 1 and 7/7 = 1 [BEGIN YOUR TURN perhaps this could be done as a drag and drop.] Match each fraction with its appropriate term, PROPER, IMPROPER or WHOLE Answers 5/8 PROPER 8/5 IMPROPER 8/8 WHOLE 7/6 IMPROPER 6/7 PROPER 7/7 WHOLE 21/5 IMPROPER 5/21 PROPER 21/21 WHOLE 3/100 PROPER 100/3 IMPROPER 100/100 WHOLE [END YOUR TURN] Mixed Fractions or Mixed Numbers [glossary term; a fraction number consisting of a proper fraction and a whole number together http://www.bing.com/Dictionary/search?q=define+mixed+numberFORM=DTPDIA] A whole number and proper fraction together is a Mixed Fraction or also known as a Mixed Number. Examples: 1 1/3, 2 1/4, 16 2/5 [Pictures may need to be redone. The Great Gatsby :: essays research papers
Doesnââ¬â¢t it always seem as though rich and famous people are larger- than-life and virtually impossible to touch, almost as if they were a fantasy? In The Great Gatsby, set in two wealthy communities, East Egg and West Egg, Fitzgerald describes Gatsby as a Romantic, larger- than-life, figure by setting him apart from the common person. Fitzgerald sets Gatsby in a fantasy world that, based on illusion, is of his own making. Gatsbyââ¬â¢s possessions start to this illusion. He lives in an extremely lavish mansion. ââ¬Å"It is a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden.â⬠It models an extravagant castle with a European style. Indoors it has ââ¬Å"Marie Antoinette music- rooms and restoration salons.â⬠There is even a ââ¬Å"Merton College Library, paneled with imported carved English oak and thousands of volumes of books.â⬠There is even a private beach on his property. He also has his own personal hydroplane. Gatsby also drives a highly imaginative, ââ¬Å"circus wagonâ⬠, car that ââ¬Å"everybody had seen. It is a rich cream color with nickel and has a three-noted horn.â⬠It has a ââ¬Å"monstrous length with triumphant hat-boxes, supper-boxes, tool-boxes, and terraced with a labyrinth of windshields and a green leather conservatory.â⬠Other than Gatsbyââ¬â¢s possessions, he develops his personal self. His physical self appearance sets him apart form the other characters. His smile is the type ââ¬Å"that comes across four or five times in life. One of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it.â⬠He has a collection of tailored shirts from England. They are described as ââ¬Å"shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel.â⬠He has shirts with stripes and scrolls and plaids in coral and apple-green and la- vender and faint orange, with monograms of Indian blue.â⬠Gatsby wears a unique ââ¬Å"gorgeous pink rag of a suitâ⬠that sets him apart as a ââ¬Å"bright spot.â⬠Gatsbyââ¬â¢s mannerisms are different too. He gives the ââ¬Å"strong im- pression that he picks his words with care.â⬠Gatsby is an ââ¬Å"elegant young roughneck whose elaborate formality of speech just misses being absurd.â⬠Gatsby also has a particularly distinct phrase which is ââ¬Å"old sport.â⬠Further, at his parties he stands apart from the other people. Unlike everyone else, he does not drink any alcohol. Also, there are no
Helen Stoner :: English Literature Helen Stoner Essays
Helen Stoner Helen Stoner is instantly stereotyped by readers as a judicious and unpretentious lady of high society England. Conan Doyle pulls the strings of the Victorian males desires and creates a 'damsel in distress', who comes to a man for aid that she does not have the resources to conclude herself. He portrays her as a woman who is wronged and in great danger therefore adding to the suspense of the story. Analysing the assortment of clothes that she is wearing the reader can conclude that she is of sufficient 'breeding' and discreet. 'A woman dressed in black, and heavily veiled' tells us that she is unaccustomed to travelling around the conurbation solitary. She is dressed in black as not to attract attention. It was uncommon for women of a high-class family to travel around the metropolis alone, she may think this shameful, which is interesting considering that it contrasts to modern day westernised civilisation where it could be interpreted as independent. Manners were of paramount importance in Victorian society, and Helen Stoner is represented as a woman who is capable of being able to display the correct 'society manners'. Victorians were very pedantic about how a woman was allowed to greet any males in her presence. The fact that she is 'heavily veiled' specifies that she does not wish for Dr Watson or Mr Holmes to direct any attention to her looks but instead to her story. This suggests to the reader that no improper conduct was to be entertained. Helen Stoner also clearly has a methodical mind. She has natural intelligence yet is prohibited to show any real deduction that may question a mans views. This is why she visits Mr Holmes. She has no power over her stepfather, her views, as a woman would be thought totally irrational by other males, so she seeks professional (male) help in the form of Sherlock Holmes. It is comprehensible to me that she has been pushed beyond her mental limitations as a human being long ago, 'She raised her veil as she spoke, and we could clearly see that she was indeed in a pitiable state of agitation, her face all drawn and grey, with restless, frightened eyes, like those of some hunted animal. Her features and figure was those of a woman of thirty, but her hair was shot with premature grey, and her expression was weary and haggard' yet she has put up with what she has been reduced to simply because it was seen as improper for a woman to question what a man was doing or for a woman to draw attention to her home life.

A short story that is written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Essay
This is a short story that is written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. At the time in which this short but very good story was written it was one of the first detective fiction story. This review of it will guide you through why it is a typical but very well written story. It includes the most famous detective in the world and is still a household name to this very day. The detectives name is Sherlock Holmes and has been written and read about for a number of decades. The main frame of the story is a lady called Helen Stoner who is worried about her life and comes to Sherlock for help and advice. Holmes with his partner Doctor Watson investigates Helens sisters death and hopes to find out the reason for this sinister crime. After looking and analysing the story it is evident that it has the right ingredients for a good detective fiction story. The ingredients that have been well placed into the story are a good opening. The opening starts with Sherlock waking up to his companion Watson and explaining that he is needed as a client is in deep worry. The other essential ingredients are drama, suspense a heroine or a such as Holmes as the hero and Helen stoner as the heroine. Detail is important in every story and detective fiction is no exception. Without detail the reader cannot properly understand what the situation the detective is in. Also the story has to have a good ending to it or maybe a twist like ââ¬Å"The Speckled Bandâ⬠does. The twist in this is totally unexpected as the killer is the father. The most important ingredients to a story, which I think is essential to the reader, are characters with good and believable characteristics. Without this ingredient the story is simply not a story. The reader has almost to know the character and then when this is accomplished they read on knowing that the person will follow the description that they have been given by the author. A good example of this is Dr Roylett. The words that are used here give a basic impression of him. ââ¬Å"violence of temperâ⬠, ferocious quarrels with whoever might cross his pathâ⬠, ââ¬Å"shut himself up in his houseâ⬠. From reading these statements the reader can imagine that this Roylett man will be any help with Holmes investigation. If they read on from here then they find out that he is not.
